Subungual Hematoma

A subungual hematoma is sort of like a blood blister under your nail.

Common signs and symptoms:

  • Red/brownish discolouration of the nail

  • Throbbing pain

  • Tenderness

  • Swelling

What causes subungual hematomas?

It is caused by trauma to the nail such as dropping a heavy object on it. This trauma crushes and breaks the blood vessels in the area and they “leak out” of the vessels into the space under the toenail. Since the toe nail is so thick, this build up of blood can cause pressure which can lead to the throbbing pain that most people feel.

Treatment:

Treatment includes helping to relieve the pressure under the nail. This can be done in the clinic by cutting back the nail or in some cases, puncturing the nail to release the fluid building up. Alongside this, elevating and icing the area may help to reduce swelling.
