Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are seen commonly in the lower leg, when veins become enlarge. This can be due to weakness in the valves of veins, causing blood to inadequately pump back to the heart and collect around the ankle and lower legs. Varicose veins are present in both men and women of various ages and very beneficial during pregnancy! Varicose veins may appear raised from the skin and blue/purple/red in color.

One of the main treatments for the prevention of this condition is compression stockings. Compression stockings are a medical device that provides controlled pressure to the limb. The device works by squeezing the walls of the veins together to improve circulation and reduce swelling. There are different degrees of pressure, most commonly the medical grade we prescribe is 20-30mmHg. There are also different materials, colours, lengths and styles of compression stockings to choose from.
