Compression Stockings

Compression stockings are a specialized hosiery or sock designed with a graduated compression to help improve blood circulation and prevent the occurrence and/or progression of venous disorders. They essentially help the leg push the blood back up to the heart.

Conditions in which compression therapy is considered include: varicose veins, edema (swelling) and achy/tired legs.

Compression stockings are for both men and women. They vary in compression strength, style, colour, and length.

Compression stockings >20mmHg are prescription grade compression and need to prescribed by a physician or chiropodist.

Important points for use:

  • Get measured for compression in the morning when the legs are the least swollen

  • Do not wear compression to sleep

  • Most compression need to be handwashed, but some may be put in the washing machine on a cold water cycle and then are hung to dry
