Hammer Toes
Hammer toes are common toe deformities in which the middle toe joint is abnormally bent causing a claw shape. This can lead to instability during standing and walking, and can be a source of pain. This condition may occur in all four lesser toes, however, is most commonly demonstrated in the second toe.
Early detection and treatment is essential to prevent the severity of the deformity from progressing. If left untreated, other foot conditions may develop such as bunions, calluses, corns and ulcerations. Surgery is sometimes considered in severe cases where conservative management has been exhausted and the toe has become rigid, and painful.
Common signs and symptoms:
Pain along the middle joint of the smaller toes with standing, walking or pressure from shoes
Toes that are claw-shaped and bent at the middle joint
Blisters or Corn on top of the toes
Rigid and stiff toes
What causes hammer toes?
Poorly fitting footwear
Structural and functional imbalances of the foot
Genetics
Treatment Options:
Stretching/Manipulation techniques
Proper footwear (i.e., wide and deep toe box)
